When you’re young, you tend to enjoy relatively good health, and as a result, it’s easy to take it for granted. Whilst most young people won’t experience heart problems, that doesn’t mean that these types of conditions only ever affect the elderly. In fact, there are many heart conditions that can affect you, regardless of your age.
Heart attacks are generally more associated with older people. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 15,000 people under the age of 55 die from heart attack each year. The actress Rosie ‘O Donnell suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, and has openly discussed her shock at realizing that it could happen to anyone, regardless of how old they are.
Tachycardia is a condition when the heart beats faster than normal at resting pace. A normal adult heart at rest beats between 60 to 100 times per minute. A person suffering from tachycardia is likely to experience 100 heartbeats or more per minute. This can cause palpitations, dizziness and chest pain; and in severe cases, can be a threat to health. Miley Cyrus suffers with this condition, and once stated: ‘there is never a time on-stage when I’m not thinking about my heart.’
Pericarditis is the swelling of the sac that surrounds the heart, which can cause sudden, stabbing chest pain. Although not generally a life-threatening condition, it can cause discomfort and other complications. Toni Braxton was in her 30s when she found out she had the condition, and commented: ‘You think it’s some old guy, retired… you can be in your 30s, less than 115 pounds, exercise – and have heart disease.’
